What is a termite baiting system?

A termite baiting system is a set of bait stations placed where termites forage. Worker termites eat the bait, carry it back to the nest and share it, and the colony slowly dies off, including the queen that keeps it alive.

Subterranean termites, the kind that cause most damage in Malaysian homes, live in colonies underground and travel into buildings through mud tubes and cracks. You almost never see the nest. Baiting works with that behaviour instead of against it: the termites themselves deliver the bait to a nest no spray can reach.

Sentricon® is the best-known termite bait system. It was developed by Dow (now Corteva Agriscience) and uses a bait that interrupts moulting, the process termites need to grow. Termites that can't moult die, and without workers the colony collapses.

How the Sentricon® termite baiting system works

Spraying kills the termites you can see. Sentricon® goes after the whole colony, including the queen, so the problem doesn't come back from the same nest.

  1. 1

    Free inspection

We find where termites are active, how they are getting in and what has been damaged, then give you a quotation. No obligation.

  2. 2

    Bait stations go in

Sentricon® stations are placed in the soil around the building, plus above-ground stations on active spots indoors where needed. There is no flooding of the soil with liquid termiticide.

  3. 3

    Termites carry the bait home

Worker termites feed on the bait and share it through the colony. The active ingredient stops termites from moulting, so the colony gradually dies off, queen included.

  4. 4

    Monitor and protect

We check the stations, top up bait as needed and confirm when activity stops. The stations stay in place to catch any new colony that comes looking for food.

Elimination usually takes from a few weeks to a few months, depending on the size of the colony and how actively termites are feeding.

Termite bait stations: in-ground and above-ground

In-ground stations protect the building from the outside; above-ground stations deal with termites already active inside. Most properties get in-ground stations around the perimeter, plus above-ground stations where we find live activity.

Termite baiting vs liquid termiticide barrier

A liquid barrier tries to keep termites out by treating the soil with chemical; baiting removes the colony that is attacking you. For an active infestation we usually recommend baiting. For new builds, a soil treatment before the slab is cast is standard practice.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a termite baiting system take to work?

Termites usually start feeding within days to weeks of finding a station. Eliminating the colony typically takes a few weeks to a few months, depending on its size and how actively the termites feed. See how long termite baiting takes, with photos from a real job.

Do I need to remove the mud tubes before you come?

No, please leave them. The termites in active mud tubes are the ones that will carry the bait back to the colony. Breaking the tubes can make termites abandon the spot.

Will I see dead termites?

Usually not. Termites that eat the bait die inside the colony as they try to moult, so you notice the activity stop rather than seeing bodies.

Can I buy termite bait stations and install them myself?

Sentricon® is installed and serviced by pest control professionals, because station placement and monitoring decide whether the colony is found and eliminated. DIY bait products sold online vary widely in what they contain.

How much does the Sentricon system cost?

It depends on the size of the property and how many stations are needed, so we quote after the free inspection. There are no fixed prices.

Found mud tubes, wings or hollow wood?

Termites keep eating while you wait. WhatsApp us a photo and your area, or call, and we'll arrange your free inspection.
